Castle Roy is about a mile north of the village of Nethy Bridge, on the B970 to Grantown-on-Spey, just beyond the Old Kirk on a small glacial mound. The surrounding Spey flood plain would have provided fresh water, soil for crops and pasture and easy access to forests for food, fuel, timber – and hunting. Sighting the castle on a hill would have improved drainage and defence. Such a substantial building in this location guarding the Spey River and Strath would have been a great asset in the 1200s.
